| The "Night of the Lanterns" Carnival |

The carnival of Sauris is one of the oldest in the "alpine arc"
and is celebrated on the Saturday and Sunday before Shrove Tuesday. The main characters are "Rolar" and
"Kheirar". "Rolar" is a magical and diabolic figure, his face blackened with soot, who tells the people
when they must start to prepare for the masque. "Kheirar" is the king of the masque.
His face is concealed behind a wooden mask, his clothes are torn and he carries a broom which he
uses to beat on the doors of houses he wishes to enter. The two characters go through the streets
of Sauris followed by a procession of masks who can be either ugly (Scheintena schembin) or handsome
(Scheana schembin). The masks hiding their faces are all made of wood. The procession continues
through the night and by lantern light goes deep into the wood in the direction of a great
propitiatory bonfire lit in a clearing.
