Every hamlet in Sauris, however small, has its own church and
some of these are home to veritable art treasures.
Documents show that in Sauris di Sotto, as far back as 1328, there existed a tiny church
which was enlarged and added to over the centuries to cope with the increasing numbers of
pilgrims who came to ask for St. Oswald's grace or to be released from a vow.
They left extensive evidence of their gratitude, such as the ex voto wooden or silver limbs
and votive cloths. The more generous among them were the devoted Venetians who presented the
sanctuary with precious holy vestments, and silver reliquaries, candelabra and processional crosses.
Thanks to the pilgrims' donations they were able to construct altars which date back to between the
16th and 18th centuries.
The most important is the splendid Flügelaltar (winged altar), created in 1524 by
the Pusteria workshop of Michael Parth of Brunico, in carved wood, gilded and painted in the
late gothic style. The central section represents St. Oswald standing between St. Peter and St. Paul.
The predella below contains an intense Pietà.
The history of the church of St. Lorenzo in Sauris di Sopra also begins in 1328.
Built on a slope close to the centre of the village, this typical little German gothic alpine
church looks today much as it did in the 15th century.
The polygonal apse with its three single-lancet pointed arch windows and the bell-tower with
its soaring polygonal spire are particularly striking.
Inside the church is another work from the workshop of Michael Parth of Brunico (1551),
a Flügelaltar of the Last Supper.
Further signs of the profound religious devotion of the people of Sauris can be found
dotted about the populated centres (votive frescoes in Sauris di Sotto) and throughout
the whole area (crucifixes, wooden tabernacles carrying sacred images).

Prayer - Fourteen angels
In the name of our Lord tonight when I sleep
fourteen angels shall I take with me:
two at my head,
two at my feet,
two to my right,
two to my left,
two who will cover me,
two who will wake me,
two who will lead me
along the paths of Paradise.
Amen. |
